On one level it’s amazing that we have this level of innovation, on another level it’s maddening to keep up. On one level this competition spurs entrenched companies to step up their game, on another it causes paralysis in business as everyone waits on the eventual “winner.”

Doing too much good can actually be bad. Trying too hard to get a lady will only make you fail, trying too hard to close a deal will definately make you fail and over-the-top-delivery of expectations will make you fail. Don’t try too hard.

This is also the first time that I won’t have a check appear at a specific time for a specific amount anymore. Trying to build a social shopping site outside of Facebook would be an expensive, slow and risky challenge. Not only do you have to attract users in their millions, but you also have to persuade them to start spending as much time on the site as they do on Facebook.

When Robert Keane launched Vistaprint in 1995, he never could have envisioned it would become the world’s leading provider of printing services to small businesses. What are those printing services? For many, it’s all about the low-cost business cards Vistaprint has become synonymous for. But it’s much, much more than that. The company recently launched branded apparel to add it to its extensive list of offerings for small businesses. Moreover, for the 2011 fiscal year, global revenue is expected to net around $785-$800 million, with business cards only estimated to be 1/3 of that figure, according to Keane.

I’m teaching this week at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication. From what I can gather so far, in conversations with Professor Deb Morrison and instructor Dave Koranda, the program is more progressive than most. Deb plays the role of creative director for the program as well as a teacher, mentor and force of inspiration. Dave is busy inventing new classes that strive to help students learn the importance of widening their interests in order to become strategic problem solvers.
