Google did need to change. However, the drastic nature of the change and the lack of any warning on Google’s part was unnecessary. Why couldn’t Google simply warn large publishers that there was an algorithm that was going to be implemented in 30 days that rewarded large publishers for developing their pages in greater detail and quality? Why not preview the change utilizing a special search or sandbox environment? At least companies could have prepared for a large drop in traffic, diversified their online marketing efforts more, and made some (much needed) improvements.

(In the past, data from social connections was limited to the bottom of the search results.)
