Unlike last year when location-based services FourSquare and Gowalla dominated the discourse coming out of SxSW, this year's conference had way too many dimensions to declare a single company or technology as the clear winner. Some companies had great marketing and PR, but less than perfect applications. While others had mind-blowing apps, but PR and marketing that simply didn't rise above the daily din.

If you use Foursquare on an Apple or Android smartphone, you will notice a significant update to the app this week. Version 3.0 has been released, and with it come significant changes that not only change the app experience, but also show that Foursquare is maturing in its use and positions is clearly alongside Facebook Places, the other dominant location-based service

Twitter chats are generally arranged in advance, and there is normally a pre-agreed theme. The conversations are centralised thanks to the humble hashtag, without which it would be rather difficult for multiple people to follow the ‘conversation’.

It could be said that there is not a great deal of difference between adding an app or bookmarking a site in a browser as the two experiences appear to be similar. However, the key difference is, undoubtedly, the placing of interactive functionality of an app above the content. As a result, consumers are beginning to always expect to receive a more immersive experience from an application – a big departure from simply clicking onto static website pages!
