When Amanda Rose began was organizing a London Tweet-up with some of her friends in September 2008, she came across some interesting results. By connecting with the right people on the popular social network, she was quickly able to grow an event in two weeks from a gathering of friends to a sold-out 250-person (er, Twitter user) event, all to benefit a local charity.

Earlier this month, Adam Vincenzini and I had an interesting talk on the state of social media around the world. One thing led to another and we agreed to take a page out of the playbook of two of the world’s best piano men, Billy Joel and Sir Elton John, by banging out on our keyboards for a joint composition. Day 3 of the Train the Trainers session was devoted to Digital Activism and facilitated by Mary Joyce. The learning objectives: To provide participants with a formula for training digital campaign strategy To reflect on how these modules might be used in their own trainings The session provided strategy theory and a simulation exercise based on creating a digital activism campaign for the Story of Electronics film (that now has Arabic sub-titles).

Social media has proven to be an excellent marketing tool for companies, but the greater power social media becomes undoubtedly apparent at certain times. One of those times is now, as many of us woke up Tuesday morning to the devastating news that an earthquake rattled the lives of those in Christchurch, NZ. Although we’ve only been aware of this natural disaster for a short period of time, social media has enabled victims to share their situation with family, friends and loved ones.

his was an opportunity for each of the in-country teams to create an ecosystem map of their networks to identify resources for the project including social media expertise. I was struck by how the teams immediately adapted and localized the mapping exercise for their country. In addition, I was struck how the “networked mindset” was something embedded in their way of working.

You see, how this story is supposed to end is this: hundreds of thousands of people heard my plea for help, and overwhelmed my server with messages of hope. The number of messages and the outpouring of passion and love for this cause brought the Interwebs to its knees. The people of New Zealand clung to those messages of hope – and another social media legend was born. This did not happen.
