Johnny Come Lately
So I finally started a blog. This blog will serve as my journal and proving ground as I attempt to escape the glamorous world of web development and jump into the illustrious world of writing.
I’ve been writing on and off for over 20 years, which may sound like a lot, but I’m only 30. I realized my penchant for storytelling when I was in the third grade. I wrote some asinine piece that made the class chuckle and the teacher blush. Since then, I’ve been applying my wit and firm grasp of the English language to various projects and journalistic endeavors. Now it’s time to rush full boar into that unheralded wasteland.
I’ll be posting updates in my ongoing quest to be published in print, rather than just on the web. I may be romanticizing the situation, but seeing your work in print seems to give it more credibility. I’ll also be posting any writing exercises, essays, and short fiction I conjure and deem worthy of posting.
To bring you up to speed, thus far I have corresponded with Upstage Magazine, The Aquarian, and Score! Music Magazine. The editors at Upstage and The Aquarian appeared to be intrigued by the story ideas I had presented. After sending them a writing sample, though, all correspondence stopped. The response is telling. Score! Music Magazine on the other hand, has added me to their list of contributors solely based on an email I had sent. They haven’t read any samples yet. Of course, they don’t pay their contributors so there isn’t much for them to lose.

John, I am curious. Are you familiar with the AP Stylebook? If not, I highly recommend buying one and learning it inside and out. Most reputable publications require writers to write according to AP Style guidelines. This might be why the publication ended communication after seeing your writing samples? I obviously have no way of knowing that, just thought I’d offer a possibility.
